ABOUT ISAMI
Setting free what was fading away.
As kimono culture declined, tabi makers across Japan closed their doors one by one. Skills were lost, the craft regions shrank, and the tabi drifted away from everyday life.
We asked ourselves: must the craft of tabi-making really disappear?
Founded in 1907. We have made tabi in Gyoda, Saitama, ever since.
Gyoda was once Japan's foremost tabi-producing region. We freed the sewing skills nurtured there from the world of kimono, and rebuilt both fabric and construction from the ground up for modern needs.
That is where ISAMI begins.
The Knit Tabi was born when artisans from two regions joined hands — the knit region of Mitsuke (Niigata) and the tabi region of Gyoda (Saitama).
Not knitted like a sock, but tailored like tabi. A pair that exists nowhere else in the world.
Untamed Elegance.
A new footwear genre, born from 1907.
